To My Baby

To my baby, my son, my sweet sweet boy

Thank you for coming into my world and turning it on its head

For teaching me more than I ever thought possible in such a short time

I am willing myself to not forget one moment of it

To imprint it in my mind

The first few months were hard

They were hard and incredible and painful and transforming

My baby, my sweet little guy

You’re teaching me the true meaning of patience

Of sitting with discomfort

Of real impermanence

Nothing is more true of watching you grow

That the only constant is change

And that I am simply a witness to it all

I can’t slow time

I can’t turn it back

But I can be with you and present and here

My baby, my happy boy

I love to love on you

To nuzzle into your neck

To smell your sweet breath

To caress your impossibly smooth skin

To feel your weight in my arms

The way your head melts into my chest

To see you light up when our eyes meet

To work endlessly for your giggles

To come to you when you cry

To count your arm rolls

1, 2, 3

To cheer you on as you grow more curious

More aware and eager to move

I love the way you fall asleep in my arms after I feed you at night

Gazing at your peaceful face, as you rest on my shoulder

Lingering here for just a minute longer

To make sure I don’t take for granted that one day these moments will be gone

My baby, my love

Thank you for teaching me about my own strength

For showing me how resilient and incredible my body is

That my mind can handle a whole lot more than I thought it could

Thank you for challenging me and your daddy

Our shared love for you and our love for each other keeps bringing us back to harmony

Thank you for growing in your own time

For showing me that you will change when you’re ready to

Thank you for being such a light

I can already see your spark and the way that you bring our family so much joy

Even as a tiny soul, you are impacting people around you

How lucky I am to nourish and nurture you

How lucky I am to live this life next to you

How lucky I am to be your mom
